This morning during my morning outing of walking to the bank, I noticed something that I decided would be something smart to blog about and it has to do with managing your business’ reputation.  Upon going into the bank, I noticed that a new construction project had just been completed.  What this new finish entailed was enclosing all of the bank tellers behind plexiglass enclosures.  Huh?  What?  The bank tellers who I hand my money to, exchange my morning pleasantries are a thing of the past?  A quick exchange of a glance and retrieving my deposit from the restricted area with heads down is now the norm?  The bank that I entrust with my life savings thinks it is good business, to send the message of 1) they really don’t care about what me, the customer 2) the place they choose to do business, is not safe?  When I asked about the change, the teller replied (from what I could hear from behind the new imposed barrier), it is for the employees safety and all of the branches are being readied for the same thing.  If the bank is such an unsafe place that the bank is going to this extent to remove contact with their customer, what are they doing to protect me the customer standing in their lobby?  What are they protecting the employee from?  Not to be flippant or lack empathy, but if a bank robber was to come into the bank, who and what would the plexiglass protect?

It would just seem to me, in the place we are in today, people need human contact.  People need to connect.  The explosion of social media is only one example of this phenomenon.  With today’s economic climate, in general, what are people’s opinion of banks?  Overwhelming, I will go out on a limb and say, it is not warm and fuzzy.  Is whatever my bank thought they were going to achieve worth the cost of  further distancing themselves from their customer?

The implications are enormous.”

Hi, me again, Smart Girl Dawn with my weekly fix of things that inspire, irritate or invigorate.  First, the inspiration…went to shop at our local Target, the one at I-94 and Ann Arbor Road, bought paper supplies, paper towels and toilet tissue.  Well, you know how you buy the big bulky MEGA 24 roll packs and then you can hardly get your arms around them to get them out of the shopping cart?  Brilliant Target has this simple fix…they adhere plastic sack material handles to the top and voila, they are so easy to maneuver!  Great marketing move, Target!

Now my irritation, how many of you have called somewhere with a customer service issue only to have the customer service person on the other end of the phone line (probably the other end of the world!) not be able to resolve your issue because they are not empowered to resolve issues; either you need to call another number or you must speak with a supervisor …as if that is not unpleasant enough, the insult to injury comes when they ask you “Is there anything else I can help you with?”  WHAT?  You did not help me with the initial issue so how do you expect me to answer that question.  Really…companies, can we just remove that from the “script” and replace with something that isn’t quite as offensive sounding to the customer?   PLEASE!

Good, bad or ugly?

Every week, one of our smart bloggers will post photos or items that caused us to pause for the cause.  Our hope is to engage you in conversation about the item, soliciting your opinion as to whether it is good, bad or ugly?

To start us off, I observed this vehicle in our office parking lot this morning.  While I think that a moving billboard can be an effective form of advertising, does this one fall into the OMG category?

Well, here I am blogging.  While being pushed pretty hard by my Gen Y daughter, Megan, I expressed much hesitation and reservation, wondering what on earth I could blog about.  After being schooled on how blogging is putting a face to the persona, giving some personal insights into the image, I am making my first attempt and hoping a connection can be found.

The first couple of things I wanted to blog about have nothing to do with my profession, owning there is more to a Smart Girl than her profession; I wanted to blog about a yummy product I have tried and one I want to try.

First, Megan and I tried the delicious chicken spinach sausages that I bought at Walmart the other day.  Nutritionally, they looked OK with 17 grams of protein, but from a practical side, they were a cinch to prepare, from pan to plate in about 8 minutes, but were so tasty, we decided they would be one of our summer must-have again.   From the first bite, the mozzarella cheese oozes and the blend of spices makes this chicken product a sausage to be reckoned with.  The package of four sausages ran $3.48 at Walmart.  There are a couple of other flavors that Megan is making a beeline back so we can try next week.  We’ll let you know…

Saw this product on TV this week and I am looking for input from my peeps to hear if anyone has tried this…

Very interested in your input, although not the coffee connoisseur as some, I thought this might be necessary have in our little boutique-type office we have here at Smart Apartment Solutions.  My questions are regarding the practicality, like how easy does it clean up, how much ice do I need to keep on hand or is it another small appliance that I feel I can’t live without only to find two weeks later it sits on the pantry shelf not to see the light of day again.  Help me; is this a must-have or a pass?

Now, back to the apartment business, over the last 30 years, a business I have grown up in.  Today, outreach marketing is on my mind.  Do you do it, has been successful, what are your expectations?  Like all marketing initiatives, one of the questions with outreach marketing is what are realistic expectations?  To get closer to a reasonable answer to that question, participants in the process must understand that outreach is about establishing long-term relationships and the formula for success involves creating a synergistic partnership with your community and the neighboring business.  Simply stated, it the efforts must be a win-win situation for all parties.  We all know what happens with the fliers left at the nail boutique, so why do I see this type of effort over and over while I hear time and time again that outreach doesn’t work.  As an industry, where are we missing the mark?  We require our staff to spend x amount of hours every week, we require them to report it, how many of us has looked at the effectiveness of it.
